Novocaine Movie's Review
Novocaine, a unique take on the superhero genre, marks another step in Jack Quaid's career following his recent roles in Companion, Scream, and notably the television series "The Boys." In this film, he portrays Nathan Caine, a man who is unable to feel pain, which aligns with his role as an assistant bank manager who has already foreclosed on a client's business. Despite his introverted nature, Nathan is friendly and adheres to a strict daily routine due to a biological condition that prevents him from experiencing pain. This condition necessitates a liquid diet, as chewing could result in him accidentally biting his tongue. Additionally, he sets his watch alarm to remind him to use the restroom every three hours to avoid any accidents.
The arrival of a new clerk, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), who is outgoing and flirts with him, contrasts sharply with Nathan's reserved demeanor. Their relationship blossoms until chaos erupts when three armed individuals dressed as Santa Claus invade the bank, robbing the safe and abducting Sherry. After falling deeply in love, Nathan embarks on a frantic journey across the city to rescue her, pushing his limits regarding pain perception. The film features intense scenes of bone-crushing agony and graphic injuries that often elicit a wince from the audience.
At the center of the film Novocaine Flixtor is an extensive, death-defying sequence set in a booby-trapped house. However, the graphic close-ups of severe injuries, particularly during a nail extraction torture scene, often overshadow the humor intended throughout the film. This creates an inconsistent tone, as it is challenging to balance comedic elements with Punisher-style violence. Although the central comedic premise may become repetitive, Quaid remains an engaging lead, and plans for a franchise are underway.
